Semiotics

Ivan try to put a lot of enthusiasm in this lesson to make it more enjoyable and interesting the concept of sensitive. To understand it better we did an exercise of communication which shows the ability of one person to deliver a message and the ability to understand the content of this message in a limited time.

The exercise was more difficult than I expected and probably the same happened with most of my mates but more or less I communicate to Alex (the receiver) the drawings of Ivan.

After the exercise, Ivan wrote the classic diagram of communication, how many times I have seen this diagram?  In how many languages? I study in Spain this diagram every year but still you can see the importance of his content. It is look very simple but it is the clue of billions of process we do, we did and will do every day.

In the rest of the lesson, Ivan showed us the difference between the concepts of signifier and signified. As far as I am concern, Ivan related signifier with physical language and signified with mental concepts.

Realism

The content of this lesson was about realism, or in another words, a critic to the relation between  realism and contemporary animation.

Ivan show us a nice photo of the National Geographic magazine, I still buy this magazine, of Giza Pyramids, he said sarcastly “Yeah, it is wonderful  but it is not real”, yeah definitely there is a great distance between each pyramid but National Geographic designers where more “intelligent” and “brave” than ancient Egyptians and they put the pyramids in the “correct” position for the photo.

Ivan asked us about the difference between the old version of King Kong and the modern one of Peter Jackson, actually I’m a big fan of the Peter Jackson’s version,  is amazing but  surprisingly most people  look it as a waste of money.
Personally I think we just look at some parts of realism,   the merchantable ones, more or less the same happen in the fantasy and unrealistic projects and work of digital animation, we need to be more open. Otherwise it will be very boring...
